Information and Analysis

Since the beginning of her Infinity Mirror Room series in the 1960s, Kusama has

created twenty distinct rooms of immersive installations so far. Infinity Mirrored Room- The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away is the most recent addition to the series. Each Infinity Mirror Room consists of a dark chamber-like space completely lined in mirrors. The room consists of small LED lights hung from the ceiling and flickering in a rhythmic pattern creating pulsing electronic polka dots, her iconic way of expressing art. The lights that reflect off the mirrors in the room creates the illusion of an endless space and will only activate when a person walks in (Davis, 2018).

"By using light, their reflection, and so on, I wanted to show the cosmic image

beyond the world where we live." - Yayoi Kusama. Even as a child, she was highly intrigued by life and death (Davis, 2018). To have an interactive installation in a dark room that represents the galaxy may inspire the audience to feel more personally connected with the universe and it also makes them question about their existence. The flow of light is manipulated to replicate the galaxy and puts them within arms reach. The light is a simple LED light that shines on and off on cue. But placed in a dark room and surround it with mirrors? It becomes a sight to behold.
